^^ Above: Rough sketch with notes! What ended up being the endpaper concept was one of the ideas I initially pitched for the cover.
Fun fact: the viol is slung over the incorrect shoulder in this early rough. This is likely because I flipped the character at some point, but I noticed and reversed it in the final art. I have a lot of trouble visualizing sided-ness and easily miss details like this, so I’m grateful that I caught it this time.
^^ When I pitched the idea to have both endpapers be a reflection of the same image, I created a rough mockup using the early sketch to share with the publisher.
